Seventy Years of Illicit History
The official founding date is 1816 (John Johnston and Archibald Campbell Brooks), but illicit distillation at this site is documented from 1742 — seventy-four years before the official opening. This is one of the most thoroughly documented examples of Islay's «shadow» history: when the Excise Act of 1823 gave distillers the opportunity to operate legally, operations at this location were already well established.
In 1887 the distillery came under the direction of Peter Mackie — one of the most enterprising figures in the history of Scotch whisky. He created the blended whisky White Horse (using Lagavulin as its base) and brought fame to the distillery. White Horse became one of the first whiskies to be bottled with a screw cap — a revolution for its time.
Today Lagavulin is part of the Diageo «Classic Malts of Scotland» series — six distilleries representing different Scottish regions. Lagavulin 16yo gained wide international fame thanks to actor Nick Offerman (of the TV series Parks and Recreation) — an advertising film in which he silently sits by a fireplace with a glass of whisky for 45 minutes became a cult internet phenomenon.
Slowness as a Philosophy
Lagavulin is Islay's «slow» distillery. The run of the spirit still lasts approximately 9 hours — the slowest on the island, twice as long as most competitors. This is not an accident but a conscious choice that influences the character.
Pear-shaped stills of small volume create additional reflux — vapours rise and re-condense, undergoing additional «cleansing». The result is a dense, rich, oily distillate with a characteristic heaviness. This texture is what distinguishes Lagavulin from its lighter island neighbours.
The flagship is matured for a minimum of 16 years — unusually long for a core range expression — in ex-bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks. The sherry adds dried fruit, prunes, bitter chocolate and dark spices. The result is a rare unity of peaty smoke and sherry complexity.
