Stolichnaya / Stoli — the capital's vodka

40% ABV Triple Distillation USSR / 1938 Birch Charcoal

One of the oldest Soviet export brands — Stolichnaya has been known worldwide since 1971. After the collapse of the USSR the brand became the subject of a protracted legal dispute between a state entity and the private SPI Group. Since 2022 the private version has been sold under the name "Stoli," while the state version retained "Stolichnaya."

From Soviet Export to Global Brand

The name "Stolichnaya" derives from the Russian word for "capital." The vodka appeared in the USSR around 1938 and was positioned from the outset as a premium export product. The iconic label bearing the image of Moscow's Hotel Moskva became one of the most recognisable spirits designs of the 20th century.

Stolichnaya entered the international market in 1971 and quickly built a reputation as a quality vodka with Soviet allure. During the Cold War it was perceived as exotic — Soviet vodka in American bars.

After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, rights to the brand became the subject of an extraordinarily complex legal battle. The state enterprise FKP Soyuzplodoimport claims the historic name "Stolichnaya"; private SPI Group, owned by Yuri Shefler, produced vodka under that name for decades. In 2022, following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, SPI Group renamed its product "Stoli," distancing itself from its Russian origins.

Grain, Quartz and Birch Charcoal

The base of Stolichnaya is a blend of wheat and rye spirit. Wheat provides softness and neutrality; rye contributes a characteristic spiciness and a light oiliness. This combination sets Stolichnaya apart from most Western vodkas made from pure wheat.

After triple distillation the spirit undergoes two-stage filtration: first through quartz sand to remove suspended matter, then through birch charcoal to smooth the flavour and eliminate impurities. This method, borrowed from the Russian vodka-making tradition, has become the standard for many Eastern European brands.

The FKP "Stolichnaya" version uses Russian water sources; the SPI Group "Stoli" version is produced in Latvia using local artesian water and partly imported spirit.
